Is the Tudor Monarch Worth It?
The Tudor Monarch is the strangest watch a major brand sells: a watch whose dial you read in a mirror. Tudor markets it as a conversation piece — a "watch for the bold." But is it a genuine collector's item or an expensive gimmick? Here's the honest answer.
What the Monarch actually is
A 40mm Tudor with an in-house-feeling automatic movement, solid build quality, and a dial printed in reverse — designed to be read in a mirror or by someone facing you. It's Tudor flexing its design muscle: the same brand that makes the Black Bay decided to make something nobody asked for, on purpose.
The case for buying one
- It's genuinely different. In a sea of Submariner clones, the Monarch is the only watch at its price that starts conversations.
- Tudor build quality. Whatever you think of the concept, the case, bracelet, and movement are proper Tudor — this isn't a fashion watch with a stunt dial.
- Collector curiosity. Divisive Tudors have a habit of becoming cult pieces. The Monarch is exactly the kind of watch future collectors hunt.
The case against
- You'll rarely read it normally. A watch you can't glance at is a watch you stop wearing. Be honest with yourself about that.
- Resale is a gamble. Cult pieces either soar or sit. The Monarch's secondary market is thin — buy it to keep, not to flip.
- The price buys a Black Bay. At Monarch money, you're in Black Bay 58 territory — one of the great modern watches. That's a brutal comparison for any novelty to survive.
The verdict
Worth it if: you already own a "normal" great watch, you love design provocation, and you buy watches to enjoy — not to impress a room.
Not worth it if: this would be your first or only serious watch. Buy the Black Bay 58 instead — it's the better watch by every objective measure, and it'll still be on your wrist in twenty years.
Our take: the Monarch is a brilliant second Tudor and a questionable first one. It's worth it as art; it's not worth it as your daily driver.
